Watch Now! Bitesize Learning: Anticoagulation in VTE

Our expert speaker Bunis Packham is a Nurse Consultant for Thrombosis and Anticoagulation in the Pathology Department of the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust. In this fascinating bitesize video, she discusses Anticoagulation in VTE. Sign up to our Cardiovascular Series: Anticoagulation in VTE in Primary Care webinar to find out more.

Risk Factors for Anticoagulation in VTE

In our Bitesize video, Bunis discusses Virchow’s Triad. She touches on why we are seeing an increase in the number of incidents of VTE during the Covid-19 pandemic. The change in lifestyle caused by lockdown has made us all more immobile. Many of us sit at home working rather than tackling the daily commute.

Bunis goes on to talk about the increased risk of VTE caused by surgery and other trauma. She stresses the importance of making her own assessment of whether a clot is provoked or unprovoked. The patient’s history and type of clot give her an idea of how long the patient will need to be on anticoagulation therapy.

Treatment of Anticoagulation in VTE

Expert speaker Bunis Packham points out that anticoagulation therapy does not dissolve the clot. Instead, it prevents another clot. It also prevents the existing clot from growing. We are born with both a clotting mechanism and a mechanism that dissolves clots. Rapid anticoagulation therapy limits the damage and scarring caused by clots.

The implications of clots that are not treated quickly are discussed along with demonstrative images. Bunis explains deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms, and how anticoagulation therapy can help. She  covers the importance of explaining things properly to patients so they can be involved in the decision making process. She also touches on renal functions and treatment calculations.
