Watch Now! Bitesize Learning: Mindfulness
Dr Emily Kennedy, Locality Lead Pharmacist and MORPh Associate Director discusses ‘Mindfulness’ in our fascinating bitesize video.
About Mindfulness
Emily recently presented at the CPC Live show. She explains what mindfulness is and how it can be used both personally and for patients. Emily builds on and explores the accepted definition:
“Mindfulness can be defined as paying active, open attention to the present moment in a non-judgemental, curious way to allow practitioners to act more reflectively rather than impulsively. Meditation is the central technique in mindfulness based stress reduction.”Jon Kabat-Zinn.
You’ll also find out about what mindfulness is not. Emily is keen to stress that it’s not about clearing your mind, emptying it of thoughts or tricking yourself into false positivity. It’s not a religion either and it’s not difficult or time consuming.
As a pharmacist, Emily finds the science behind mindfulness fascinating. She explores the impact of posture, the nervous system, and hormones on the way we feel. Then, she looks at how mindfulness could help us with anxiety, depression, physical health, pain, resilience and concentration.
